ABOUT THE CREATIVE DISTRICT

The West Nebraska Arts Center in conjunction with the City of Scottsbluff and a diverse group of local partners is working towards designating a “creative district.” Creative districts help towns set goals for growing the arts of all kinds, as a way to improve communities and grow jobs in creative professions. It is a well-defined geographic area with a hub of creative resources and activities. Creative Districts work to help communities throughout the state set goals unique to their community by planning for the future and creating a distinct sense of place with local resources in mind.  You may have even visited one!

A steering committee formed in fall of 2021 resulting in several community meetings in the  spring of 2022.  Community partners represent key industries, cultural organizations and individuals interested in seeing that the entire region benefits from the district, which means that community input is sought for an outcome reflecting the values of our residents. Ideas for the Scottsbluff district so far center around making the area walkable and tying Downtown to East Overland, providing spaces for public art as well as gathering spaces for music and creative activities on a regular basis – not just for festivals. The district uses assets already in the community and seeks to revitalize historic buildings in the area as well.

VISION
The Scottsbluff Creative District will be a hub of creative energy in the region, where the talent and soul of the community are showcased in an attractive, colorful, quirky, fun, and memorable place to be. The vibrant atmosphere will draw diverse visitors and residents alike, supporting economic prosperity and community togetherness into the future.

MISSION

The creative district will achieve its vision by:

  • Encouraging expression through the invitation of the full diversity of cultural and artistic gifts in the area- including music, food, and visual and performing arts.

  • Growing talent through supporting and hosting opportunities for art exploration, building relationships, and showcasing work.

  • Engaging youth to create a space where they have freedom and encouragement to explore creative opportunities.

  • Working together on shared goals through open and active communication among partners and actively seeking out and staying open to new people and ideas.

  • Creation of fun events and engaging activities that bring the community together and attract visitors to the district.

  • Making the beauty of our community visible in our streetscapes and buildings through public art, infrastructure improvements, landscaping, and historic preservation.

VALUES

The Scottsbluff Creative District is committed to the following values: nurturing and celebrating the creative spirit, remembering our history, being optimistic about a vibrant future, having fun, strengthening unity and growth, and helping people of all ages and backgrounds feel at home, valued, and respected.
