about Ed Wards Project

Art can change everything.  This is due to fostering the creative process which in turn allows transformation to a uniquely genuine growth.  This is at the heart of the Ed Wards Project inspired by Nebraska wildlife artist Charlotte Edwards. In her memory, Charlotte’s family wanted to help fund art education at West Nebraska Arts Center. Charlotte began painting at the age of 27 with very limited supplies using a window shade, 10 cent brushes, and paint she begged for from the local lumberyard. The pseudonym Ed Wards was something she started using with her very first painting because she thought it was a cute and clever play on her name.  As she became more aware of the realities of being a female painter in a man’s world, she decided to continue to use the signature Ed Wards as a symbol of her desire to ‘show them’ what a woman could accomplish. After winning her first blue ribbon in a professional wildlife show in 1977, she was determined to exploit her aptitudes and learn what she called ‘show smarts’.  Her wildlife artwork continued to evolve as she used her own photography as reference. She also raised turkeys, pheasants, quail, and ducks to study the details of the animals she was painting. Sharing her art with others gave her great pleasure. It’s in that spirit the West Nebraska Arts Center is thrilled to offer this opportunity to teens in our community.

This year’s instructor will be West Nebraska Arts Center Executive Director, Michele Denton.  Each session will begin with an introduction to a medium or technique, as well as formulating an intention and a concept. Students will use an art journal for this process.  This will help focus the art-making that will follow. With  guidance and support from the instructor, students will then explore a theme through drawing, painting, collage, and mixed media.
